I wanna tell you about a student of mine who cast a spell recently, to meet her life partner before her birthday (and her birthday was, like, three weeks out).
From my perspective, she was in no position to have a life partner that she would actually be happy with. Her relationship with herself wasn't super healthy, and so by extension, she was gonna be attracting the kind of person that wasn't gonna be super healthy 'cause it was gonna match her.
Her energy was coming from a pretty needy place, she vibed "Oh, if I have a partner, everything's gonna be fine." It had a little bit of that looking for a savior energy, "I want a partner to come save me from myself 'cause I don't like what I have going on, but if I only had the person, everything would be fine."
Needless to say, that spell didn't work out.
She was super disappointed.
She was angry.
She was actually devastated.
She felt cursed, like she was bound to be lonely forever.
But the worst part of it is that she felt like “this doesn't work, magic is bullshit and this is all not real and there's no way it's gonna work for me.”
So sad.
And what I always repeat over and over and over and over and over again is that magic works when you work it.
Working magic is not wishful thinking, it’s not visualizing harder, it is not manifesting by simply having the desire.
It's an actual freaking discipline.
It's a discipline and it's work and it has a structure.
And it has ways of operating that most of us are not brought up knowing. I'm one of the lucky ones who did, but most of us don't, right?
This is why I teach it, because when you think that magic is doing nothing, and having stuff happen, you're gonna be deeply, deeply disappointed.
Magic is doing the right things in the right order so that stuff actually happens. Because most of us, when we have a desire, we go after it in whatever way we know how or we try really freaking hard, and we push harder and harder, and at the end of the day, it doesn't happen, not because of a lack of effort, but because we didn't really understand what the correct things to do were, and in what order, to have the outcome that we wanted.
When I teach magic, specifically the craft of transforming reality, and I teach spellcasting, which is basically a ritual to work magic (so a ritual to transform reality in some way), I always teach my students to first get super clear on what they want. Then we go through this entire process that is about getting to know yourself, your own relationship to spirit, your own relationship to the nature of reality, aligning your conscious mind, your subconscious mind, your supraconscious mind, or divine self, that by the time you cast a spell, it's basically like a minor little whisper from Spirit that makes it all happen.
And it just happens because you've learned to use your power, you've learned to use your own agency, and you've learned to work with other powers that be, invisible forces that are totally gonna work to your benefit if you ask them.
So when you think about it in those terms, magic is really about:
... a profound understanding of the nature of reality
... understanding what precedes what
... having the thought and the vision of something before it happens,
... and an understanding of how that connects with your emotions and your energy.
None of this is necessarily difficult, but it's also not super intuitive if you haven't heard it before. So before you dismiss magic and you think that it's not real or you're disappointed that it doesn't work for you, I would invite you to really try some structured approaches from people who have a lineage and a lifelong practice, and then tell me what you think of magic.
