What if your nervous system doesn’t have to feel "safe" enough to receive what you want? What if you don't need to raise your vibration, clear your money story, embody your future self, or jump onto a different timeline? What if you're not broken, blocked, misaligned, resisting, or secretly sabotaging yourself at all?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, because there is an idea that has become almost unquestionable in the personal development and spiritual worlds: if you know what you want and you're not getting it, there must be something inside you preventing it.
And that idea has fucked with a lot of people, because it turns every problem into a problem with YOU.
You want a relationship and haven't found one, so you're not available for love. Your business isn't making the money you want, so you have a scarcity mindset. You know you need to set a boundary and can't seem to do it, so your nervous system doesn't feel safe. You've been trying to manifest the same thing for three years, so you're too attached to the outcome.
Conveniently, there is always another layer of you to fix. Which is an excellent business model for the coaching-industrial-complex, and a miserable way to live.
And listen, sometimes there really is something going on underneath the surface. Of course there is. I've been working magic for decades, and one of the foundational principles of Liberation Magic is that your conscious mind is only one part of the equation. You can consciously want one thing while another part of you wants something completely different. You can say you want the promotion and also be terrified of what the responsibility will demand of you. You can desperately want a relationship while knowing, somewhere deeper, that this particular relationship is not right for you. You can swear you want to write the book and discover that what you actually want is to have written a book, which is unfortunately not the same thing.
That stuff matters.
But so does this: sometimes you aren't blocked, you just don't know how to create the change you're trying to create, because nobody ever taught you.
We have this bizarre idea that if you're sufficiently self-aware, change should follow on its own. You understand the pattern, you know where it came from, you've talked about it in therapy and journaled about it and pulled cards about it and listened to podcasts about it, and you could probably give a TED Talk on why you do it.
And then your mother calls, and you hear yourself saying yes to the exact thing you swore you were going to say no to. Again.
That doesn't necessarily mean there is another hidden wound waiting to be uncovered. Knowing why you do something and knowing how to do it differently are two entirely different skills.
This is one of the reasons I created Liberation Magic. Because magic, as I understand it and practice it, isn't about convincing the universe to hand over whatever you put on your vision board. It's about learning to work consciously with yourself and with reality, and that requires skills.
You have to be able to see what is actually happening rather than the story you have about it. To tell the difference between what you want and what you've been taught to want. To know which parts of the situation are genuinely within your power to influence and which aren't. To make a choice. To hold your attention on that choice when every old pattern in you wants to drag you somewhere else To imagine something that doesn't exist yet, and then, sooner or later, to go do something in the actual world.
None of that requires pretending you control the universe.
It does require learning to wield the power you actually have, which I think is a far more interesting kind of magic.
So, this week, take one thing in your life that you keep treating as evidence that something is wrong with you. It might be the relationship you haven't left, or the conversation you haven't had, or the business you haven't started, the thing you haven't finished, the decision you've been circling for six months, the boundary you keep failing to hold, or the desire you keep pretending you don't have.
Instead of asking "what's wrong with me," or "what am I blocked around," try asking:
What skill would I need in order to change this?
That's a very different question. And sometimes, changing the question is where the magic begins.
If you try it, hit reply and tell me the skill you landed on. One line is plenty. I read all of them.
Courage, truth, and infinite love,
I don’t believe in magic, but I know that it works!
Magic is not a belief system, it’s a practice that works. Don’t believe me? Come try it out. If it doesn’t work, you lose nothing. But if it does… your dream life is about to begin!
Hi Reader, There's always that person. You get laid off, or dumped, or the scan comes back wrong, and someone trying to be helpful says: "Everything happens for a reason." And you want to slap them. Of course you do. I'm also that person who's like, what is the freaking reason?!?!? And yet, I do believe that everything happens for a reason. But the why is a pointless question. Because when you try to answer it, you tend to find a verdict instead of a reason. I get fired, and the reason is:...
Hi Reader, I want to tell you something that might sting for about four seconds and then feel like the biggest relief of your year. Your spiritual practices aren't working because they're not practices yet. They're learnings. And learnings look almost exactly like practices from the outside, which is why so many of us are walking around confused, exhausted, and secretly wondering what's wrong with us. Here's what I mean. People come to me and they say, I've done the work. And they have....
Hi Reader, I wanna tell you about a student of mine who cast a spell recently, to meet her life partner before her birthday (and her birthday was, like, three weeks out). From my perspective, she was in no position to have a life partner that she would actually be happy with. Her relationship with herself wasn't super healthy, and so by extension, she was gonna be attracting the kind of person that wasn't gonna be super healthy 'cause it was gonna match her. Her energy was coming from a...
