Last week, I started Liberation Magic, and one of the first witchwork assignments was to spend some time in nature everyday.
This is the most basic practice, being outdoors and remembering that for most of human existence, we didn’t think of nature as out there, but rather, we were truly one with it. And still are, whether we realize it or not.
Dwight Schrute from The Office, played by Rainn Wilson
A couple of days later, Dwight from The Office, Rainn Wilson, published an op-ed in the New York Times about his environmental work, and, I quote, he said the following:
To transform our relationship with our planet in this time of climate crisis, we need to value nature as profoundly sacred. Spiritual, even.
If we want to plug into the wonder of nature, we need to start by actually spending time outside.
.. for the last several hundred years, [we] had a relationship of extraction with our sacred Mother Earth. Instead we need one of sacred regeneration.
Regeneration is the key word in this conversation; it points to the cycle of death, growth and life. Regeneration is hope. ... I have let this concept sink in so that it motivates me to make my steps upon this Earth be more like prayers.
And I’m all like, I’ve never even watched The Office and now we have Dwight channeling my Liberation Magic lessons straight to the NYT!!
He was telling the story of an environmental gathering that included Indigenous elders, and not surprisingly, he ended up channeling a lot of witchy wisdom, because Indigenous wisdom around the world tends to share the same basic truths.
I felt so validated and seen. Not like I need a white guy from Hollywood to validate me, more like a “I TOLD YOU SO for the last 500 years, but who’s counting…”
The first practice in Liberation Magic is to spend time in nature. And one of the 3 magical axions that I teach is that everything is born, dies, and is reborn. What my boy Rainn calls Regeneration.
In a sea of shitty news, this article made me feel hope. When the most mainstream of the mainstream are understanding the true nature of reality, the wisdom of the witches, and shamans, and healers, and are comfortable talking about it in the newspaper, I’m choosing to take that as a sign of change.
What have you seen recently that might look like a sign of positive change? Please do let me know, I’m trying to collect as many as possible.
I don’t believe in magic, but I know that it works!
Magic is not a belief system, it’s a practice that works. Don’t believe me? Come try it out. If it doesn’t work, you lose nothing. But if it does… your dream life is about to begin!
This Halloween, like many Halloweens, I didn’t celebrate in the way most people do, with costumes, candy, or parties. Last year, I was home with a few witches, deep in ritual, when a little kid knocked on the door yelling, “Trick or treat!” We froze. I looked around at my sisters and said, “It’s gonna have to be trick… because I’m a really bad witch and I have nothing prepared.” We laughed, but the truth is, Halloween for me tends to be a working day. A time when the veil thins and spirits...
When I teach my students how to cast spells, I always begin with one simple question: What do you want? What do you actually want to see happen in your life? What would make you feel happy, fulfilled, like, yes, this is it? That’s where the spell begins. But here’s what usually happens: as soon as they start naming their desire, the mind jumps in with a loud “But how?” How could that possibly happen? How would I afford it? How would it ever come together? And I’m like — well, yeah.If you could...
I got an email the other day from a student wondering if Liberation Magic could help with limiting beliefs. In general, people think of limiting beliefs as things we hold to be true (and may or may not be), but that get in our way of moving towards our dreams. And while that’s true, these beliefs are not a bad thing. A limiting belief almost always starts out as a survival spell. It was a small act of magic you cast long ago to stay safe.To protect your heart. To make sense of a world that...
