If you knew how, it wouldn’t need magic.

When I teach my students how to cast spells, I always begin with one simple question:

What do you want?

What do you actually want to see happen in your life?
What would make you feel happy, fulfilled, like, yes, this is it?

That’s where the spell begins.

But here’s what usually happens: as soon as they start naming their desire, the mind jumps in with a loud “But how?”

How could that possibly happen?

How would I afford it?

How would it ever come together?

And I’m like — well, yeah.
If you could see how, you wouldn’t need to work magic.

You’d just go out and do it.

That’s kind of the point.
Magic begins where logic ends.

Magic lives in the space beyond your current map of the world.

It’s what happens when you set the what (your desire) into motion,
and let the how reveal itself in time.

Here’s an example I shared in class recently.

There was a time when I was working magic around money.
And I got super clear that I didn’t just want “more money.”
I wanted to earn more, through my own work.

That mattered to me.
I didn’t want a random inheritance or someone in my family dying and leaving me a check.
I wanted to make more money with my own energy and skill.

So I cast the spell with that intention, and sure enough, more clients started showing up. Income went up. Everything flowed.
That’s what happens when you’re clear about the what and open about the how.

But here’s where paradox comes in, because, yes, you want to name your desire clearly, but you don’t want to get picky about the details of how life delivers it.

Unless there’s a specific “how” that really matters to you (like mine did), then let it go.

Name what matters, but don’t micromanage the Universe.

Because figuring out the how is not your job. It’s magic’s job.

If it were your job, you would have done it already.

For example, if I want to be less anxious, and therapy is helping, I just keep going to therapy. No magic needed.

But if I’ve been in therapy for years and I’m still anxious, then yeah, I might try a spell. Because clearly, the “how” I already know isn’t giving me what I want.

Will I tell the Universe how to make me less anxious? Nope. Because I have no idea how that might happen.
That’s the mystery. That’s why it’s magic.

And that’s also why a lot of practitioners finish their spells with something like: “May this be so for the highest good of all.”

It keeps the energy clean. It makes sure you’re not accidentally casting for something that ends up hurting you or anyone else.

So your job this week is simple:

If you didn’t have to worry about how it would happen, what would you want?

Dream about what you want without worrying about how you’re going to get it.

Let it be wild. Honest. Shameless.

Because without real, deep, passionate desire, there’s zero magic.

Go want what you want.

And let magic figure out how you’ll get it.

Courage, truth, and infinite love,

I don’t believe in magic, but I know that it works!

Magic is not a belief system, it’s a practice that works. Don’t believe me? Come try it out. If it doesn’t work, you lose nothing. But if it does… your dream life is about to begin!

This Halloween, like many Halloweens, I didn’t celebrate in the way most people do, with costumes, candy, or parties. Last year, I was home with a few witches, deep in ritual, when a little kid knocked on the door yelling, “Trick or treat!” We froze. I looked around at my sisters and said, “It’s gonna have to be trick… because I’m a really bad witch and I have nothing prepared.” We laughed, but the truth is, Halloween for me tends to be a working day. A time when the veil thins and spirits...

I got an email the other day from a student wondering if Liberation Magic could help with limiting beliefs. In general, people think of limiting beliefs as things we hold to be true (and may or may not be), but that get in our way of moving towards our dreams. And while that’s true, these beliefs are not a bad thing. A limiting belief almost always starts out as a survival spell. It was a small act of magic you cast long ago to stay safe.To protect your heart. To make sense of a world that...

Hi Reader, Last week, I started Liberation Magic, and one of the first witchwork assignments was to spend some time in nature everyday. This is the most basic practice, being outdoors and remembering that for most of human existence, we didn’t think of nature as out there, but rather, we were truly one with it. And still are, whether we realize it or not. Dwight Schrute from The Office, played by Rainn Wilson A couple of days later, Dwight from The Office, Rainn Wilson, published an op-ed in...
