My feed is full of “effortless success”

You've seen the posts. If it doesn't feel good, it's not in flow. If it's hard, it's not meant for you. You can make this much money without doing this and without doing that.

Yup. And a pony.

I, as a witch, believe that life is organized around paradox. And what I mean by paradox is contradictory things that are true at the same time. I believe that life is fucking fantastic. It's filled with joy, with pleasure, with beauty, with fun, with love. And it's also filled with destruction, and war, and hate, and toxicity, and a bunch of shit we don't dig.

I don't believe we can experience one without the other. And personally, I'm very, very suspicious of anyone who talks about the easy, soft life.

Not that I don't want an easy, soft life. I do. And I think it's totally achievable. To an extent. Because I also believe that if I'm not willing to go through discomfort, if I'm not willing to face my grief and actually feel it, if I'm not willing to put in the effort toward what I want to accomplish, then I'm not going to have access to the full spectrum of what life has to offer.

You already know this has nothing to do with being energetically misaligned. It has nothing to do with not having the right spiritual practice. It has nothing to do with believing the wrong things. It only has to do with being in denial about the nature of reality.

If you've done the therapy, the journaling, the courses, the vision boards, and you're still stuck, this might be why. You're not doing spirituality wrong. But if you're avoiding the part of reality that asks you to break down before you get to rebuild, you will get stuck.

The nature of reality is such that everything, everything in life is born, grows, eventually dies, decomposes, and is reborn. Everything. Plants, animals, people, corporations, galaxies, relationships, ideas.

If we choose to think the death and decomposition part is horrible, we're going to have a really shitty time. If we choose to believe that the death and decomposition part can be painful, can be filled with grief, can be uncomfortable, can even be disgusting, but we also accept it as a natural part of life, we're going to be way better prepared to deal with those experiences when they happen. And we're also going to have the full spectrum of emotion and experience available to us, because we're not going to be half-assing it, and we're not going to be trying to find shortcuts to a full life.

I'm not seeking pain, because I'm not a masochist. I mean, no shade if you are. Totally fine. But I'm also not looking to avoid it at all costs. I'm looking to avoid pain to the point where it's reasonable. I believe that life comes with a certain amount of unavoidable pain, and if I'm willing and ready to face that amount of pain, I'm going to have a much better time experiencing all of it.

And also: let me be super clear that life comes with a ton of shit that is completely unavoidable. An illness, a death, a failure, the system choking you financially, energetically, emotionally. None of these things happen because you’re unwilling to face them. My point is that once you’re in this situation, your willingness to go through them, paradoxically, will make them more tolerable.

If you can tolerate frustration, disappointment, anger, sadness, grief, you're way more likely to fully embrace joy, beauty, ecstasy when it comes your way, because you're not avoiding anything. You're also willing to make more sacrifices.

Sacrifice literally means “to make sacred.” Somewhere along the line we came to believe that a sacrifice is suffering for no good reason, which is ridiculous, because it's just going through whatever it takes to make something sacred. If you're willing to sacrifice for your career by working hard, or for your relationship by compromising, or for your art by struggling with your inner demons and expressing them publicly, then you're enduring these discomforts to make something sacred.

I know in our culture this is not a popular concept. We all want it quick, we all want it easy, we all want it pretty, and everyone is peddling a shortcut.

I'm here to tell you that if you want a great fucking life, if you want to work powerful magic, if you want to work toward true liberation, there are no shortcuts. Other than knowing there are no shortcuts, and being willing to make things sacred as soon as possible, rather than finding out the hard way that the shortcut was a lie to begin with.

This week: what shortcut are you willing to ditch, and what are you making sacred?

Courage, truth, and infinite love,

I don’t believe in magic, but I know that it works!

Magic is not a belief system, it’s a practice that works. Don’t believe me? Come try it out. If it doesn’t work, you lose nothing. But if it does… your dream life is about to begin!

A white door nearly hidden by overgrown greenery, symbolizing the back door approach to feeling stuck

Here’s something that sounds like a riddle but is actually incredibly practical: The solution has nothing to do with the problem. Think about the different aspects of yourself: Your mind: your thoughts and beliefs.Your heart: your emotions and feelings.Your body: your physical state and the actions you take.Your spirit: your energy and connection to something larger. When you’re trying to change one of these aspects of yourself, the easiest way in is often through the back door. What I mean...

Three barn swallows perched in a row on a barbed wire fence, with a soft green-and-tan blurred background.

I’ve been noticing a trend on social media where people talk about how to get what you want. And they say that beyond the manifestation, the vision board, the meditation, the affirmations, making a change is about identity. It goes something like: become the person who already has what you want. How does the woman who's completely satisfied in her relationship think, feel, behave, desire? What does the business owner who's actually thriving act like? The career person landing the promotions and...

A woman with long curly dark hair stands in a lichen-covered orchard, wearing a black dress with a red floral pattern, resting her hands on a gnarled, moss-covered tree branch and looking off to the side.

Someone wrote in with a question I want to answer publicly, because I guarantee you're not the only one sitting with it. She said: I have noticed that when I think of something, it is appearing in my reality the same day or at the very least within a week. It's freaking me out because I don’t understand how I am doing this and I don’t understand what this ability is called. Here's my read, right up front: She's not doing this. This is happening to her. Not the same thing. I get why this...
