Why I Don’t Use Magic on Drumpf (Even Though I Could)

The other night, my partner Jeff and I went to dinner with a friend who wanted us to meet his new girlfriend. He was clearly smitten, all smiles and glowing. It was so cute!! The kind of happy you can’t fake after being single for too long.

The conversation was light, easy, a little bubbly… and then it drifted into unexpected territory: magic.

This friend has been curious about Bruja School for years. He’s asked me to explain Liberation Magic before, but that night he wanted to hear it again. (I’ve learned that people come back to these conversations when something in them shifts, even if they don’t admit it.)

So I gave him the quick overview about the program, the TLDR version of how and why it works.

And then he turned to his new girlfriend:
“So… do you believe any of this stuff?”

She gave one of those careful shrugs, the kind that says I’m not saying I do, but I’m not saying I don’t either.

And then, without missing a beat, he turned back to me and said:
“If this works, why don’t you do something about the president?” (I won’t type his name, sorry).

It was such a predictable question, I had to laugh Because it’s the same one I’ve been asked more times than you’d think, by people who are half-joking and half completely serious. I mean, totally valid question.

His girlfriend thought maybe I didn’t because of that old “what you send out comes back to you” idea, something she’d heard about magic from Latin America, which is totally true but I'll get into that some other time, because that’s not my reason at all.

Here’s the real reason:

As a witch, I know I have no idea how the Divine works in the big picture. They say She moves in mysterious ways, and they’re not kidding.

If you’ve ever seen one of those movies where someone goes back in time to save a person’s life, only for that person to die another way because it was “fated”, you get it.

There are ripple effects we can’t see.

So I don’t meddle in the business of individuals I haven’t been asked to work for. My magic is sacred. I use it to make myself healthy, wealthy, and strong. I use my activism to push back against the very real, very dangerous rise of authoritarianism.

But magic? I don’t waste it on individuals like the one who shall remain nameless. Not because I’m afraid of “karma,” but because I don’t know what role they’re playing in the bigger picture.

Maybe his role is to take the U.S. so far into crisis that we finally wake up to our own collective power. Maybe his chaos is the bottom we have to hit before we start building the society we’ve always dreamt of.

Do I like it? Hell no.
Do I trust it? Not always.
Do I work to fight it in the real world? Like hell. E-v-e-r-y-d-a-y.

But my magic stays focused where it’s most powerful: on me, my life, my community, and the people who ask me for help. That’s where I can work clean, effective, transformative magic.

It’s not about inaction. It’s about discernment.

And that’s why all the magic I recommend you work is for yourself, or for those who’ve asked for your help.

Because that’s where the real transformation happens.

If you want to learn to work that kind of magic, the next cohort of Liberation Magic starts in September, and doors are now open!

I hope to see you there.

I don’t believe in magic, but I know that it works!

Magic is not a belief system, it’s a practice that works. Don’t believe me? Come try it out. If it doesn’t work, you lose nothing. But if it does… your dream life is about to begin!

Hi Reader, I genuinely believe that we’re each the curators of our own experience, even though I forget it all the time. I don’t mean curator as in “only look at my apparent fabulousness on social media” sort of way. I mean the deeper way I get to choose where I put my energy, my attention, my focus, my love… I can decide what story I tell myself, who I hang out with, what I eat. Every little decision shapes my life, and curates my reality, if you will. Reality is layered. There are thousands...

Hi Reader, I’ve been dancing for years, but I still take classes, because there’s always more to learn. One of the reasons I love dance so much is how literal it is as a lesson for life and relationships. The other day in class, the teacher was explaining how the follower should surrender into the arms of the leader, but keep one foot back for stability. That way, if the leader doesn’t know the move or loses balance, the follower still has their own grounding. What I heard was:Yes, surrender...

Hi Reader, There was a night, many years ago, when I was sitting on my kitchen floor, wailing, as one does when one’s life has just imploded. My boyfriend had dumped me, my physical health was absolute crap, and I had no clue what I wanted anymore. I had two choices:Keep numbing, blaming, spiraling.Or remember what my grandmother taught me: magic is what you reach for when nothing else works. And here’s what happened: I didn’t get an overnight miracle. But slowly, I learned how to stay calm...
